ZD, I'm not completely following you. If you're saying it's sometimes beneficial and sometimes detrimental for the Product Owner to attend the entire retrospective, of course I agree. Thus, we don't need to add a rule to Scrum for things better decided by teams and their Product Owners.

What a relief it is to read the last line. There is no rule requiring Product Owners to attend the Sprint Retrospective meeting and I've found this working against 'team spirit'.

I began setting up Retrospective meetings for teams around specific issues/stories inviting the Product Owner as a guest. I found after laying down ground rules, providing context and inviting team members to open up - the conversations that ensued were tremendously beneficial. Often, it is a relief to be heard within the same room.

The team I'm working with now was inviting Product Owners for a limited time (15 mins). This has changed recently and the Product Owners are now asked to attend the full session.

The benefit is simple: All owners and decision makers within the team are in the room which helps identify what we all can do to improve our work and reward each other.
